Melasma Maintenance

Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by the development of brown or grayish-brown patches on the face, often due to sun exposure and hormonal changes. Managing melasma involves a combination of preventive measures and skincare practices. Here are some daily tips to manage your melasma.

Use Sunscreen Daily:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF (40 or higher) every day, even on cloudy days. Sun protection is crucial in preventing melasma from worsening.

Wear Protective Clothing:

  • Wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and clothing that covers your skin to provide additional protection against UV rays.  Clothing and hats that have UPF protection are highly recommended.  Facial melasma can be activated by UV exposure to other parts of the body.

Choose Sun-Protective Cosmetics:

  • Use makeup products with added sun protection to protect your skin while enhancing your appearance.  Tinted sunscreens are proven to provide more UVB protection, than non-tinted sunscreens.

Use Gentle Cleansers:

  • Choose mild and gentle cleansers to avoid irritating the skin. Harsh cleansers can exacerbate melasma.

Topical Treatments:

  • OTC topical treatments include – Vitamin C, TXA, Niacinamide, Kojic acid and Licorice Root.  Consult with your practitioner to explore prescription treatments such as tretinoin, hydroquinone or oral TXA.

Manage Hormonal Factors:

  • Do work with a healthcare professional to manage hormonal factors that may contribute to melasma, such as birth control methods or hormone replacement therapy.

Consider Laser Treatments:

  • However, use caution with laser treatments.  Make sure your practitioner is experienced in treating melasma with laser therapy.  Applying too much heat to the skin can trigger further hyperpigmentation issues.  The gentle, Clear and Brilliant Laser with 1927nm wavelength is an excellent choice with no social downtime.

Supplements

  • Polypodium leucotomos (found in products such as Helioplex and Shade Factor) can decrease your absorption of UV rays.  This is a good addition to your regimen when vacationing and expected extended time in sunny locations.

  • Glutathione is a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.  It can help to reduce acne and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.  It has also been found to decrease melanin levels in individuals with melasma.
